THE PULLEN FAMILY OF

CASTLE COMBE, WILTSHIRE
(aka Pullin, Pulling, Poullin etc)

CASTLE COMBE

Castle Combe is a village in the heart of Wiltshire, England (picture above).  The village was originally known as "Combe".  The first houses were built during the 12th Century, when a Castle was built, and the village became known as "Castle Combe".  The Castle was badly damaged during the 14th Century, so it was abandoned in favour of the new Manor House (see below). The village has a lot of history and was famous for being a film set for "Doctor Dolittle" in 1966.

The below picture was taken at the turn of the 20th Century

THE PULLEN FAMILY

The family goes back to JAMES PULLEN and SARAH.  James was born c.1658.  The couple married in 1683 in the village and had 9 known children:

William (abt 1684), Richard (abt 1686), Ann (abt 1689), James (abt 1693), Aaron (abt 1696), Rachel (abt 1700 ~ died 1701), Jane (abt 1702), Rachel (abt 1703), Moses (abt 1707)

THE AUSTRALIAN CONNECTION

At least one branch of the Pullen family decided to emigrate to Australia.  THOMAS PULLEN ~ grandson of THOMAS & HANNAH ~ married ANN CHAPPEL in 1829.  Ann's family also came from Castle Combe.

They had 11 children:

Josiah (b. 1830), Jemima (b. 1831), Ethan (b. 1833), Eli (b. 1837), Thomas (b 1840), Sarah (b. 1842), Kezia (b. 1845), Samuel (b. 1847), William (b. 1840), Rebecca (b. 1851) and Uriah (b. 1854)

Annie Pullen b. 11 Feb 1859 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia

daughter of Josiah Pullen & Elizabeth Teague

A few of the above named children emigrated with their parents in January 1862 aboard THE CHARIOT OF FAME, namely Kezia, Rebecca, Samuel, Thomas, Uriah and William.

THOMAS & ANN's ages are given incorrectly on the ship's passenger list. We are certain that this was because people of a certain age were not allowed into Australia.

However, some of the other children had emigrated earlier than the rest of the family ~ most brave!

JOSIAH emigrated on THE WANDSWORTH in 1853

JEMIMA emigrated on THE METEOR in 1853

ETHAN emigrated aboard THE LORD ASHLEY in 1855

ELI emigrated aboard THE MORNING STAR in 1857

SARAH was left behind (we think in service) and didn't join the family until much later in 1872 aboard THE GREAT BRITAIN

Note: I have a great deal of information on the Australian branch, and I am in contact with the descendents of the above.  Please contact me if you require details.
