PARENTS OF ERIC OAK :

ERIC OAK's father was EDWARD ERNEST HANCOCK born 1864 in West Wratting, Cambridgeshire.  He married ANNIE GIDNEY at St Paul's Church, Clapham 25 December 1891. Edward was also a Master Butcher by trade.

Unfortunately Edward Ernest committed suicide on 15th August 1932 at his home in Copenhagen Road, Gillingham.  A report was made in the local paper - the Chatham, Rochester & Gillingham News (see report transcribed)

FURTHER BACK

The parents of EDWARD ERNEST were JOHN HANCOCK and ELLEN OAK (obviously where the middle name of Oak came from).

JOHN HANCOCK was born 1834 in Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire and died 4 Oct 1900 in Sittingbourne, Kent (only a few miles from where I live now).

JOHN married ELLEN OAK (date undiscovered yet) who was the daughter of THOMAS OAK  (see further down the page for the OAK's) and HANNAH SHIPPELLEN was born 1838 in Weston Colville, nr West Wratting, Cambridgeshire.

JOHN and ELLEN lived at 24 East Street, Sittingbourne, Kent which was a "Boot Shop". They are listed in the 1891 Census of Sittingbourne.
JOHN
died of Senility Asthenia aged 66 ~ his occupation was stated as "Master Outfitter".

JOHN and ELLEN had 10 other children besides EDWARD:

JOHN THOMAS (born 28 Apr 1862 West Wratting, Cambs)
MARY J. (born 1867 West Wratting, Cambs)
FREDERICK W. (born 1868 West Wratting, Cambs)
ALICE MAUD (born 22 May 1870 Sotherton, Suffolk)

Percy is buried at Avesnes-sur-Helpe Commund Cemetary, Nord, France & his name appears on the Sittingbourne, Kent War Memorial.

PARENTS OF JOHN HANCOCK

The parents of JOHN HANCOCK were JOHN HANCOCK (born abt. 1804 Fulbourn) (died 13 Apr 1844 Chesterton, Cambs.) and JANE DEER. (born abt. 1809 Cambs.). They married 17 July 1832 in West Wratting, Cambridgeshie. I know that JOHN was a Grocer at the age of 35 and had a Grocer's shop in Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire.

Their children inc JOHN were:

WALTER (born 1835, Fulbourn, Cambs.) ~ married MAHALA?

ERNEST EDWARD (born 1837, Fulbourn, Cambs.)

ARTHUR (born 1839 ~ a triplet) died after just 1 day

HORACE (born 1839 ~ a triplet) died after 7 days

JANE (born 1839 ~ a triplet) died after 7 days

Very sad for the family. Not only were triplets very rare in the early 1800's, but to lose all of them in such a short space of time must have been devastating for the family. WALTER & ERNEST were the only ones to survive.

INTO THE 18TH CENTURY

JOHN HANCOCK's parents were JOHN HANCOCK(born abt. 1773 Fulbourn) (died 2 Apr 1834 Fulbourn) who marriedSUSANNAH NEWMAN (born abt. 1722)(died 19 Jan 1844 Fulbourn). The couple married 19 Apr 1803 in Fulbourn St Vigor Church,  Fulbourn.

JOHN's death appeared in the Fulbourn Chronicle 4th April 1834:

"Died on Wednesday last, much respected in the 62nd year of his age, Mr John Hancock, Shopkeeper of Fulbourn"

I do not have any details, yet, of any other children from this marriage.

PARENTS OF JOHN HANCOCK SNR.

THOMAS HANCOCK (born abt 1725 Fulbourn) (died 2 Oct 1779 Fulbourn) married MARY (surname unknown & date unknown). MARY died 2 Feb 1835 in Fulbourn.

I only have details of one other child, a sibling of JOHN SNR :

THOMAS born abt. 1779 in Fulbourn.

The furthest I can go back in the HANCOCK tree is to a WILLIAM HANCOCK, father of THOMAS (dates unknown). The records are pretty bad for the Hancock's mainly being Bishop's Transcripts, which are very sketchy for Fulbourn.

DEER's

JANE DEER was born abt. 1809 in Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire. She married JOHN HANCOCK (see above). Her parents were EDWARD DEER (born abt. 1766 Fulbourn) who married HANNAH MANNING 5 Jun 1797 Fulbourn.

EDWARD and HANNAH had 2 other children besides JANE:

MARY (born c.1800 Fulbourn)

CHARLES (born c.1802 Fulbourn)

I know that there are quite a few Deer's in the County in surrounding areas of Fulbourn. I have been told that this name is quite unusual and therefore it is quite probable that all Deer's in that area are related.

PARENTS OF EDWARD DEER :

EDWARD DEER's parents were JOHN DEER and ANN HART who married 23 Mar 1761 in Fulbourn All Saints.

I know that JOHN DEER was born in Brinkley, Cambridgeshire.

There were 3 other known children of JOHN & ANN

MARY (b. abt 1768 died bef. 1770)

MARY (b. abt 1770) (another one)

JEREMIAH (b. abt 1776)

THE 17TH CENTURY

As the records have been pretty good for Cambridgeshire I have managed to trace back well into the 17thCentury.

The next generation is WILLIAM OAK (born c. 1645 in Burrough Green & died Jun 1697 in Burrough Green) who married ANN  LEGGAT (born abt 1645 Reach, Cambs & died in Burrough Green - date unknown).

I only have information on WILLIAM as yet.

THE FURTHEST GENERATION

I can now go back to the beginning of the 17th Century, to WILLIAM OAK (born c. 1615 Burrough Green & died 1697 Burrough Green) who married ANN MILLER 30 Nov 1636 in Burrough Green.

I know of only 2 other children of WILLIAM and ANN besides WILLIAM:

ANN (born c. 1638 Burrough Green) - ANN had a "baseborn" child also called ANN in abt 1669 in Burrough Green.
